There is a slight feeling of disconnect from the original Alien, from Ripley’s character. That said, the movie is still a very fun ride and brings in new iconic characters who surely will go on to be staples of the franchise.

The Black Phone (2021) 4.5/5
Derrickson hits a home run here with a chilling performance by Hawke and surprising newcomers.
Creep (2014) 4.5/5
It avoids scrutiny that normally happens because it is just two people and both feel fleshed out to make their behaviors make sense. A very unsettling film, and I may need some tubby time to wash it off.
Unbreakable (2000) 4.5/5
Fantastic performances from everyone involved with a strong presentation of simple ideas.
Inside Llewyn Davis (2013) 4.5/5
A wonderful move to watch wrap around itself. I feel like I need a few more watches to really dig into the movie.
Judas and the Black Messiah (2021) 4.5/5
It must have been incredibly hard to balance this movie. I can’t fault the age of the actors too much vs the real life people when no doubt they probably got people in seats and the movie made. Everyone is on their game and the story carefully balances how much of each character we get. I did feel a little longing for more knowledge of the politics in it but I appreciate the movie nonetheless.
The Big Sick (2017) 4.5/5
Great cast across the board and a lovely story carried by those convincing performances. It sways between romanticism and realities with mostly ease and it feels heartfelt.
Appaloosa (2008) 4.5/5
I saw Appaloosa years ago, and now again, and I still enjoyed it a lot. It is a very slow film with a lot of character, dialogue, and patience. Life slowly rolls by and even the action has a patient, audience-aware, build up. I admire its ability to eschew being over dramatized and keep interest.
